Join us for this award-winning Korean film. In this story, there is one post-apocalyptic world, and one “self-sustaining” train makes its rounds around the world. On board are human survivors who are divided into strict social groups, with one unfair regime governing them all. At the bottom of the social ladder (and the train), one can find the poor masses who are dressed in rags and survive on protein bars, and, at the top, there is the elite, consisting of a few individuals who ruthlessly preside over the masses, while enjoying the luxuries of life.

When one man from the bottom of the train sparks the rebellious spirit in the masses, he does not even begin to imagine the complicated way to the top of the train nor what awaits him as he nears the real power propelling the train forward. Snowpiercer is not one’s ordinary action or sci-fi film; wrapped in philosophical reflections and delicately balancing humor and horror, and realistic action and allegory, the film defies expectations, requiring both a leap of faith and open-mindedness from its audience. Discrete Time-to-Event Regression Analysis Under Left-Truncation with Applications to Consumer Finance

Abstract:

Asset-backed securities (ABS) play a vital role in financing American consumer automobile debt. Recently, economic analysis into ABS has benefited from the public release of data, which provides a new, rich source of loan level consumer auto loan information. Because this loan lifetime data is discrete-time and subject to random left-truncation, however, it is nontrivial to analyze. This has attracted recent study, but there is still no suitable approach to model this ABS loan lifetime data that incorporates regression coefficients for the lifetime of interest.

We thus generalize the conditional, bivariate distribution to link to covariates, while keeping the left-truncation distribution unspecified. We solve the high-dimensional, constrained likelihood-based parameter estimation problem numerically, using a block coordinate descent design. Under suitable regularity conditions, we provide the complete large sample, multivariate normal distribution of the estimators. This allows for large sample inference into variable and model selection. We both prove all results and verify them through simulation studies.

Our methods are then applied in an economic study of borrower prepayment behavior for 1,553 consumer auto loans from the 2017-3 Ally Auto Receivables Trust ABS bond. We find that borrowers with pick-up trucks prepay slower, all else equal, among other consumer finance insights.

Abstract

Financial social media platforms have emerged as an increasingly important source of information for investors, as illustrated by the role of Seeking Alpha, Reddit, X (Twitter), and other platforms in the 2021 “meme stock” episodes and the subsequent SEC report on equity market structure. While prior research has largely focused on the informativeness of social media content—asking whether social media sentiment predicts stock prices or trading activity—our understanding of how social media reshapes the broader capital-market information environment remains limited. Using data collected from Seeking Alpha, a leading crowd-sourced financial research platform and one of the largest online investing communities, my dissertation supplements this literature from three perspectives. First, I examine how human editors on financial social media influence the capital market by selectively promoting certain articles, thereby directing investor attention and affecting price discovery and liquidity. Second, I study how the language style of content contributors—specifically, their use of self-inclusive language—shapes perceived credibility, article quality, and subsequent return patterns. Third, I investigate the implications of social media analysts’ coverage on firms’ financial reporting quality, particularly earnings management. I find that, different from sell-side analysts whose coverage is associated with decreased earnings management, coverage by social media analysts is associated with increased accrual and real earnings management.

The first paper (coauthored with Ari Yezegel) examines the role of Seeking Alpha editors as gatekeepers by studying the platform’s “Editor’s Pick” designation. I show that editor-promoted articles elicit stronger return and trading volume reactions and are incorporated into prices more quickly than otherwise similar non-promoted articles, particularly in periods of high uncertainty and for firms with limited sell-side coverage. Editor promotion also reduces information asymmetry and improves liquidity, reallocates investor attention away from other articles, and induces authors to increase effort in their subsequent contributions. These findings highlight the economic importance of editorial decisions on financial social media, especially in information-poor environments.

The second paper (sole-authored) examines how social media analysts’ language style affects investor reactions, focusing on their use of self-inclusive language (first-person pronouns such as “I” and “we”) in Seeking Alpha articles. Decomposing self-inclusive language into a routine component and an abnormal, potentially opportunistic component, I find that routine usage is associated with higher article quality and more favorable stock returns, consistent with credible engagement. In contrast, abnormal self-inclusive language is linked to lower-quality content and negative long-run price performance, even though such articles attract more and more favorable reader comments. The evidence suggests that some analysts strategically use self-inclusive language to bolster weak research, and that this behavior is dampened when reputation concerns are stronger or when information asymmetry is lower. The results are not sensitive to the inclusion of plural SIL.

My third paper (sole-authored) examines whether coverage by social media analysts (SMAs) affects firms’ financial reporting quality, focusing on earnings management. I find that increases in SMA attention are followed by higher levels of both accrual-based and real earnings management. These results are robust to multiple alternative specifications and measurement choices. In contrast to prior evidence that greater sell-side analyst coverage is associated with lower earnings management, the findings indicate that SMA coverage does not play a monitoring role comparable to traditional sell-side coverage.

ABSTRACT

Sponsorship is “a cash or in-kind fee paid to a property (typically in sports, entertainment, arts, or causes) in return for access to the exploitable commercial potential of that property” (IEG 2017). Organizations today are investing more money in sponsorships, and more organizations are incorporating sponsorships in their marketing plans. But making sponsorship investment decisions is complex. And no theory driven decision-making framework exists to assist companies with selecting events to sponsor. The need to address this gap was our main motivation to do this study. Our dissertation seeks to improve sponsorship investment decision-making. We do that by creating a validated quantified decision-making framework for sponsorship investments that can inform managerial practice. We are structuring the stages as a three-paper format.

In the first paper, we map out the current sponsorship decision-making process. We do that by first conducting a literature review of research on sponsorship decision-making. As we find limited pre-existing research on the process of sponsorship decision-making, we conduct qualitative semi-structured interviews with seven organizations to explore the question “How do these sponsors take decisions on sponsorship investments?” Our findings suggest that there is no standard process for sponsorship decision-making in organizations and sponsors navigate through uncertainty using qualitative judgements and sense making. We identify that the three critical decision-making factors from their perspective are sponsor-event fit, audience-event fit and activation opportunities, but they do not have a quantitative way to evaluate them. Therefore, there is value in building a validated quantified sponsorship decision-making framework.

In the second paper, we take the next step by building a new measurement model which captures the three critical decision-making factors, sponsor-event fit, audience-event fit and activation opportunities. We conduct a literature review to understand how these three common factor constructs are currently measured. We find that the measurement of these common factors needs to be updated to reflect the behaviors and opportunities of today’s sponsorship and audience environments. We update the items using expert reviews, conduct a consumer survey using those items to collect data for sponsorships by 8 brands across 2 events, and then use a sequence of quantitative methods to determine validity of the common factors and finalize the measurement model. With a validated measurement model, the next step is to create a framework that can be used for taking decisions.

In the final paper, we plan to extend the measurement model into a decision-making framework and fill the gap identified in paper 1. We will do that by including other elements that influence outcomes – main elements being the amount of spend on activation, as well as moderator elements like length of sponsorship and pre-existing perceptions about the sponsor. We will build a structural equation model that will test the structural paths between the common factors in the measurement model, the new elements and sponsorship outcomes. We also plan to use statistical simulations to test the potential impact of uncertainty in decision elements on outcomes.

This 90-minute long training takes participants through self-reflection activities and action planning in order to foster a more welcoming and inclusive campus community.
